Preventing Varicose Veins
There are many risk factors that can contribute to the development of varicose veins. They most often occur with advancing age and are more in women and those with a family history. Varicose veins are also associated with obesity and prolonged standing.
Even when risk factors for varicose veins are present, there are many self care measures that improve circulation in the lower extremities and may minimize, reduce discomfort or even prevent the occurrence of varicose veins. These measures include:
- Regular exercise
- Maintaining your ideal body weight
- Eating a diet high in fiber and low in sodium
- Wearing low healed shoes
- Elevating your legs whenever possible
- Avoiding garments that constrict your circulation
- Avoiding standing in one place and in the same position
When these self care measures are not effective and/or varicose vein symptoms are troublesome, varicose vein surgery is an option. Patients are advised to seek treatment for varicose veins that eliminates the underlying problem rather than just removing existing varicose veins. Varicose vein treatment that treats existing venous disease will prevent future varicose veins from developing and is often covered by the patient’s insurance.
