Are aching, burning, swollen and/or tired legs keeping you from living a full and happy life? Do you have excessive bleeding from leg injuries and leg ulcers that heal slowly or not at all? Some venous problems like spider veins and varicose veins are obvious and may be cosmetic concerns only. Others are signs of serious venous disease that can lead to years of unnecessary suffering that severely compromises quality of life. At JVAI, we believe that venous disease treatment begins with empowering facts for making the best possible choices.
The Venous SystemFacts about the venous system explain how the venous system works, the two venous systems in the legs and how incompetent veins can produce venous disease ranging from varicose veins to serious venous leg ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency.
Signs & Symptoms of Venous DiseaseSigns and symptoms of an underlying venous problem range from aching, burning, swollen and/or tired legs to restless legs, leg pain, skin discoloration, difficulty healing leg wounds and ulceration. Venous disorders including spider veins, varicose veins, leg ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency may all be associated with underlying venous disease.
Venous DiseaseWhen the valves in the superficial and deep veins in the legs cease to function, gravity can reverse the vein flow and move the blood back towards the feet when the legs are at rest. This restricts venous drainage and results in increased blood pressure in the surface veins of the leg. The result is spider veins, varicose veins, venous leg ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency.
Spider VeinsSpider veins are thin thread-like veins that lie close to the skin’s surface and are bright red to blue in color. Spider Veins are caused by abnormal venous blood flow resulting in an increased pressure in these smaller blood vessels, causing them to stretch and become prominent. Many patients are bothered by unsightly spider veins because of their cosmetic appearance.
Varicose VeinsWhen the valves in the veins cease to function, gravity can reverse the vein flow and move the blood back towards the feet when the leg is at rest. This restricts venous drainage and results in increased blood pressure in the surface veins of the leg. Over time, this causes the veins to distend, producing varicose veins which may lead to more serious venous disease.
Venous Leg UlcersMost ulcers of the lower legs and serious venous disease are caused by incompetence of perforator veins in the calf. These incompetent veins generally occur on the inside of the ankle. When valves in the perforator veins become incompetent, high-pressure blood from the deep system flows towards the skin and produces very high blood pressure of the surface veins. Incompetent veins in the superficial and deep veins can produce spider veins, varicose veins, leg swelling, leg ulcers and serious infection. Both of these problems often are present in a patient with advanced venous disease.
Chronic Venous InsufficiencySerious venous disease can result in swelling or edema, prominent varicose veins, skin discoloration, skin thickening and even painful, debilitating venous leg ulcers. This cluster of symptoms secondary to underlying venous disease in the saphenous and perforator venous systems are known as chronic venous insufficiency.
