Are your Spider Veins and Varicose Veins a Cosmetic Issue or Something More?

spider veins cosmetic2 300x273 Signs and SymptomsIf you’re like many women wanting to show off your smooth, sexy legs, before rushing out to a cosmetic vein center, understanding the facts about venous disease may save you thousands of dollars, prevent redevelopment of spider and varicose veins in other parts of your legs, and eliminate your tired, aching, swollen leg symptoms once and for all.

The Progression of Venous Disease and its Symptoms

Venous disease can begin with a cosmetic issue of spider veins. Left untreated, venous disease can progress to a serious condition called chronic venous insufficiency with associated leg pain, swelling or edema, prominent varicose veins, discoloration of the skin and even debilitating venous stasis leg ulcers.

One of the first signs of venous disease and the need for vein treatment is often distention of the most delicate skin veins or “spider veins.” As the disease progresses, larger veins dilate becoming varicose veins. Pressure on distended veins produces an aching leg pain, night cramps and unusual sensations like “water flowing down the legs” or “crawling feelings on the skin.” Leg swelling or edema occurs when fluid leaks from dilated veins into surrounding tissues. Increasing pressure in the venous system may cause blood to leak out, producing a brownish skin discoloration. At the capillary level, there is a disturbance in the ability of nutrients and wastes to be exchanged. Tissues respond initially with a thickening of the skin and later, a venous stasis leg ulcer may develop from death of this tissue. The ultimate consequence occurs when the leg ulcer is accompanied by infection of the surrounding skin called cellulitis.

I had vein surgery at the Joyce Institute and I am so happy with the results! I had varicose veins and they are gone. We are still working on the spider veins, but in just a matter of months I’ve had a 95% improvement in the appearance. Thanks to Dr. Joyce and his fine staff for a 5-Star treatment. –S.J., Port Charlotte, FL
